MVAVC is Coming to Lincoln for its Fall Show and Sale: 

"An Evening with African Violets"

The Missouri Valley African Violet Council's 37th Annual Fall Show and Sale comes to Lincoln's Eastmont Performing Arts Center, October 26th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

MVAVC is an affiliate of the African Violet Society of America and is a regional group drawing members from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and South Dakota and across the nation and Canada. The Show will be judged according to the African Violet Society of America’s merit-based judging rules. There will be horticultural exhibits of a variety of African violets and gesneriads, (African violet relatives), dish gardens, and interpretive design arrangements utilizing African violets and other materials. The show and sale are free and open to the public.

 

At 2 p.m. that afternoon, Scott Evans, M.Ag., Horticulture Program Coordinator with Nebraska Extension in Douglas-Sarpy Counties, will present on “The ABC’s of Growing African Violets” about the basic growing needs for your African violets and what to do if you think your plant has an issue. Scott is a member of the Omaha African Violet & Gesneriad Society.

 

In addition to the judged show awards, attendees can submit their vote for their favorite part of the show -- A People’s Choice Award. Each person entering the room will be given a "ballot," to choose their favorite exhibit. Those who provide their contact information on the back of their ballot will have a chance to win violet-related prizes, including a year’s membership to the African Violet Society of America with a subscription to the African Violet Magazine, a year’s membership in the MVAVC, or the book, YOU CAN Grow African Violets by Nebraska natives Joyce and Kent Stork (the official guide authorized by the African Violet Society of America. Voting will close at 3:30, and the People's Choice winners will be announced at 3:45 p.m.

 

MVAVC is one of the host affiliates for the 79th Annual Convention of the African Violet Society of America to be held in Overland Park, Kansas, in May 2025. The convention and show will have the theme, Violets are "Worlds of Fun" and will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Kansas City-Overland Park from May 25-June 1, 2025.

The Lincoln African Violet & Gesneriad Society meets at Eastmont's Bistro, just down the hall from the Performing Arts Center, from 9:30 until 11 a.m. the second Saturday of every month (Sept - Nov. and Jan. - May). The public is welcome.
